Neath Port Talbot District Nurses

What can be done to encourage more staff to want to work in community settings?

In Swansea Bay UHB, Neath Port Talbot District Nursing team is attempting to inform nurses in secondary care and student nurses what Community Nursing is and bust some myths.

What would improve your day-to-day life working in the community?

Understanding how community nursing works is the biggest obstacle to smooth transfer of care from secondary to community. These myths and fact sheets have been used well as Catrin has said and we need to continue to communicate the excellent career progression that can be achieved in community along with a raft of skills that you would not also get in secondary care.

Hi Catrin,

Thank you for sharing this.

As Cath mentioned, it is vital that we communicate the excellent opportunities that come with working in the community. Your posters do an excellent job of doing this.

What more do you think we can do centrally to help promote working in the community and to tackle the misconceptions that are held?

I think there needs to be a national campaign to explain the role of the District nurse. From personal experience of working in secondary care for 16 years I did not know what the role entailed until I left to work in the community. If nurses don't know what district nurses do how are the public supposed to know?
